What is Ekadashi | Meaning & Spiritual Significance

Ekadashi is a fortnightly festival of fasting and self-restraint. The origin of the word Ekadashi is ancient language Sanskrit. Ekadash means eleventh and hence it is the 11th day of the lunar calendar that is celebrated as Agiyaras. Agiyaras too means the number eleven in regional Indian languages like Gujarati, Hindi, and Marathi.

The Hindu lunar calendar months are divided into Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha. While Shukla paksh is the fortnight when moon is in its darker half, Krishna paksha is the fornight when moon is in its brighter half. The 11th day of every fortnight is observed as Ekadashi. Hence every lunar month has two ekadashis.

Mostly, devotees abstain themselves from eating routine meals or grains, beans, lentils, and vegetables. Instead, they eat fruits, nuts, and milk.
